Didim Municipality also participated in the European Environment Agency Marine Litter Monitoring Program! While the Mayor of Didim Deniz Atabay participated with his wife and children in the work that took place in Fener Bay on Saturday, February 06, 2021, Cleaning Works Manager Aslı Kıray and TÜRÇEV North Aegean Provinces Coordinator Doğan Karataş accompanied nearly 40 municipal cleaning personnel. Our eyes could not believe the wastes and types we collected if took place in Fener Bay, which is not known much!

During our 4-hour detailed collection and characterization study, we collected 5365 pieces of garbage with a total weight of 1.5 tons! Unfortunately, it was the plastics that had the largest share in what we collected!

Among plastics, shotgun cartridges take first place with 903 pieces! Bottle caps, fishing ropes, straws, shopping bags, plastics smaller than 2.5 cm… All of them were recorded on the European Environment Agency marine litter maps. Next time we have a goal to collect those that have sunk into the seabed! We made a lot of notes to ourselves, asked why, listed our measures plan! We hope we find less waste on our 2nd tour ... We are waiting for the news of those who want to join us in our effort to protect the environment and leave a clean world for future generations!

Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) is a network of passionate young people educating for sustainable development by producing, engaging, creative, environmental journalism. Coordinated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), YRE is in more than 25 countries worldwideand growing!
Participants, aged 11-21, investigate environmental issues and problems and report on them through written, photographic or video journalism, wherever possible proposing solutions.
