INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION (Foundation for Environmental Education, FEE)
FEE is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in 1981, working with member organizations representing 76 countries worldwide.
It is not possible to say that people are sufficiently informed about sustainable environment and/or that they apply what they know to protect the environment. The goal of the Foundation for International Environmental Education, FEE, is to inform the public, to enable them to understand these issues and to direct their institutions, organizations and society to active behaviors.
FEE's programs reflect these two standards:
- understanding and taking action
- provide opportunities to learn and create opportunities to take action
Since its foundation, FEE has worked for the implementation and development of its international projects based on environmental education and sustainable development throughout Europe, and today for their active implementation and dissemination in the Republic of South Africa. Through its projects, it promotes the operationalization of Agenda 21 and the active participation of people of all age groups in solving environmental problems.
Until 2001, its name was 'European Foundation for Environmental Education, FEEE' because its projects were implemented only in European countries; in 2001, at the General Assembly held in Copenhagen, Denmark, the name was changed to 'International Foundation for Environmental Education, FEE' after South Africa became a member.
Education for Sustainable Development
While information and awareness-raising are cited in Agenda 21 as the keys to sustainable development, education is also a necessity to show that society's activities affect the environment. Only when awareness is raised can habits be turned into action. All the projects of the International Foundation for Environmental Education bring together many disciplines and perfectly demonstrate the interaction of different disciplines. International cooperation and communication, especially emphasized in the Young Spokespersons of the Environment and Eco-Schools projects, clearly overlaps with the principles set out in the Rio Declaration.
Relations with the European Union
FEE also plays an important role in the harmonization process during the enlargement phase of the European Union. One of the most important problems faced by candidate countries is harmonization with the EU's environmental regulations. Since FEE foresees EU standards in its projects and works together with the civil society organizations of the candidate countries, it also facilitates the EU harmonization process of these countries.
